This is my cat Lilly....... No don't panic.... I haven't swapped my LinkedIn profile for Instagram #cutecats #meow #bringapettoworkday.....however Lilly provided the inspiration for this article. Lilly became a part of my life when I met my wife in 2009. At the time, my wife's home had no cat door and Lilly liked to get up early - around 4am every day. Her communication method, to explain she would like to leave the house, was a lot of meows plus an amazing paw technique on the bedroom door - imagine the karate kid with "wash on, wash off". I won't lie, it was pretty annoying but Lilly is very cute and so is the wife and I didn't want to lose either of them! Where is the leading you may ask? #getamoveon. Well in 2011 we moved to a new home and one of the first DIY jobs for me was to install a cat door. It took a while for Lilly to get the hang of it but something strange happened - she would go in and out herself at any time except at 4am when she would still come and see me! For the last 4 years I have got out of bed and escorted Lilly to the cat door where she looks at me and then just walks out. This photo was from a recent 4am encounter and it made me think about why does she still do this? Well, I think it's been so long now that it's the only way she knows (maybe it's old cats as well as old dogs that you can't teach new tricks to?).

Within my work as a strategic business advisor/ consultant I see this “reset and repeat” behaviour extremely often, especially when it comes to strategy. Many businesses know that their strategy isn't correct but "it's how we have always done things". However, in a business world full of disruption the businesses that are succeeding are the ones that are willing to adapt, think different and challenge the status quo. January is the perfect time to reflect on last year and ask what didn't work and, more importantly, what you are going to change. To help my clients I created a 10 step review process to help them challenge the way they have always done things. Businesses need to assess not only their business objectives and strategy but also their target customers, competition, how their brand is perceived, messaging and the way they create compelling content. The other key element is how smart they are at spending their marketing budget and what channels they are using.

So this year, don't be like Lilly the cat and just keep doing the same thing because it's all you know, challenge yourself to look at your business with 360 vision. Oh, and if anyone has any suggestions re my cat then let me know!
